Who I am

I’m Alex, the Head of Animation at ngx, a Vancouver-based creative technology studio.  Leading a skilled team of 10, I oversee the delivery of large-scale projects for museums worldwide, blending styles from simple 2D animations to hyper-realistic 3D.

What I do

My current role involves not only directing animation projects but also managing broader aspects such as developing animation pipelines, introducing innovative creative strategies, and mentoring junior artists.

How It Started

After graduation, I started as a 3D modeler and texture artist at a Vancouver-based studio, where I quickly developed a keen interest in understanding and contributing to the various aspects of production. I believe that knowing how each piece fits within the larger puzzle not only enhances decision-making but also makes the creative process more fulfilling. This philosophy has guided my approach ever since.

Building HardEdge Creative

In 2011 I founded Hardedge Creative, a boutique studio focused on 3D design in the advertising field. At Hardedge, I had the privilege of collaborating with a diverse range of talented clients, ad agencies, artists, and creative directors. Together, we brought to life everything from abstract and surreal concepts to highly realistic visual experiences. At Hardedge I continuously challenged myself to explore new styles and unique ways to tell a story, leading me to become particularly interested in lighting and look development to make a vision come to life.

Leading at ngx

In 2017, I seized the opportunity to establish and lead the animation department at ngx, a Vancouver-based creative technology studio. Building the department from the ground up and shaping its direction has been one of the most rewarding challenges of my career. As Head of Animation, I work closely with producers and creative directors, managing the bigger picture while staying hands-on throughout the process. I’ve been involved in nearly every stage of development—from initial ideation to on-site installation—ensuring the vision and details are executed seamlessly. Together with a talented team, we’ve delivered large-scale projects for museums worldwide, including the Royal BC Museum, Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and Grand Egyptian Museum, blending styles from simple 2D animations to hyper-realistic 3D.

What Drives Me

I’m driven by a love for problem-solving, whether it’s tackling technical challenges or finding the most efficient way to stack the dishwasher! I’m also passionate about continuous learning and expanding my creative knowledge. Currently, I’m exploring how AI tools can enhance the creative process and diving deeper into Unreal Engine production to push the boundaries of digital animation.

Away From The Screen

I live in a small town just outside of Vancouver, in beautiful British Columbia, with my wife, our 15-year-old dog Noodle, and our cat Maple. Outside of work, I love spending time outdoors, whether it’s hiking above ground or exploring below the sea. I also enjoy the hands-on process of creating and designing unique furniture pieces and other woodworking challenges.
